Visting Cartagena, Colombia

We’re excited to share a few of our favorite places in the area with you!

Boca Grande

Bocagrande is an upmarket area popular for its long, sandy beaches backed by palm-lined promenades. There are several casinos, along with an eclectic dining scene that includes beach snack bars, stylish Japanese and Colombian restaurants, global fast-food chains and mellow cafe terraces. Smart boutiques sell local and international fashion, while Plaza Bocagrande is an upscale mall with sea views.

Isla Barú and Islas del Rosario

The Isla Barú or Isla de Barú is a former peninsula south of Cartagena, Colombia. It was cut off from the mainland by the Canal del Dique, but is still connected by bridge. It projects out southwest from the southern end of Cartagena towards the Islas del Rosario.

The Rosario Islands, also referred to as Corales Islas del Rosario, is an archipelago located off the coast of Colombia, approximately 20 kilometres from Cartagena. It is one of the 46 Natural National Parks of Colombia.

We recommend booking a day trip through our concierge.

The Walled City &
San Felipe Castle

A city of nearly one million residents on Colombia's Caribbean coast, Cartagena is a fascinating combination of old and new. Despite boasting high-rise hotels and miles of beaches, it's Cartagena Walled City that really attracts the masses. Colorful and dripping in bougainvillea, the old town is just as beautiful as you would imagine. Discover the top things to do within the city walls, from churches to plazas!

Visiting Medellín, Colombia

A 1-hr non-stop flight from Cartagena, Medellín is the capital of Colombia’s mountainous Antioquia province. It is nicknamed the “City of Eternal Spring” for its temperate weather. The best way to describe it-- imagine a city in the underbelly of a jungle. Chris and I love this city and would absolutely live here.

Communa 13

COMUNA 13 USED TO BE one of the most dangerous areas in Medellin but community projects and a series of outdoor escalators have helped turn this poor district into one of the most colorful communes in the city.

The result was the creation of one of the most colorful communes in Medellín. The area surrounding the six sets of escalators is now covered with murals and graffiti, with bright colors and street art decorating walls once riddled with bullet holes. Many murals tell the story of Comuna 13, or depict local heroes, the artwork sliding by as you ride the escalator up to the top of the hill, where a lookout and boardwalk provide excellent views across the city.

Guatapé

Guatapé is an Andean resort town in northwest Colombia, east of Medellín. It’s known for its houses decorated with colorful bas-reliefs. It sits by the vast, man-made Peñol-Guatapé Reservoir, a busy water-sports center. Piedra del Peñol, a giant granite rock southwest of town, has hundreds of steps to the top, where there are sweeping views. The nearby Marial Stone is giant rock with an overhang.

Paragliding Experience

This experience was honestly one of the highlights of our first time in Medellín. You'll soar high above the city, taking in breathtaking views of lush valleys and towering mountains. With experienced instructors guiding you through the skies, it's an adventure you won't soon forget. Don't miss this exhilarating opportunity to see Medellín from a whole new perspective!

The best part about this hotel is that it's next door to the venue (you can walk to the hotel in seconds!)

At Vista Mare, they have spaces designed for comfort and relaxation. Their rooms are located in different bungalow-type cabins and are a tribute to the flagship islands of the Caribbean Sea.

We have a reservation block available for this resort, so if this is where you'd like to stay, please advise us so we can add you to the list.

Where to Stay: Cartagena

If you are interested in staying closer to the city center, here are some options. They will be 15-20 minutes away from the venue by boat.

Bocagrande

Again, we recommend Bocagrande. This will be the nicest area with more options, and hotels/AirBnb's with the most amenities. Properties in this area will be a 10-15 minute uber ride to the port.

The link below is a sample of an Airbnb we have booked for a group of four people. We recommend the area as it is close to nearby restaurants, the mall, and the beach.

The Walled City

There will be plenty of hotels and AirBnbs to choose from within the walled city.

Regardless of where you stay within the walled city, you will be walking distance from restaurants, bars, the La Serrenzuela mall, and different shops. Depending on where you stay within the city, you will also likely be a 5-10 minute drive or a 15-20 minute walk to the port.

*Please note that some areas are known for their nightlife-- this may be good or bad, depending on what you're looking for.
